Abstract

Evaluation of hybrid resultedrom crossing ofMadura and oriental tobaccoProductivity and quality of tobacco could be improved by improving genetical traits through crossing Oiental tobacco was used as donor parent due to high number of leaves and aromatic that was able to enhanced the yield and quality of Madura tobacco. The exploits of heterosis in hybrid were expected to short cut the time of research The experiment was conducted in some villages i.e. [«bbek and Klompang Barat (District of Pamekasan). Por-dapor and Guluk-guluk (District of Sumenep) during 1997 season. The treatments consisted of four hybrids and Prancak-95 as the standard variety Hie purpose of the experiment was to find out the potency of hybrids and their improvement compared to Prancak-95. Sliced tobacco yields of all treatments were not different, except Ft Prancak-95x Ismir produced 0.701 Mia. closed to Prancak-95, i.e. 0.703 Mia Genotype x environment interaction affected on grade index, but this hybrid still the best one in Lebbek. K lompang Barat. and Por-dapor. Its standard heterosis was 43% while standard heterosis for crop index was 31.41%.

Abstract

Response of ramie clone on growth regulator spray and liquidfertilizer supplementThe experiment of growth regulator and fertilizer supplement applica¬ tion was conducted at the green house of RITFC from November 1995 to June 1996 to accelerate the vegetative growth of ramie clone Pujon 10. The objective of the research was to find out suitable growth regulator to accelarate the vegetative growth of ramie clone Hie treatments were the application of /.PI and PPC as the supplement to NPK fetilizer application through the soil. I lie application was conducted one time and two times. The research used a completely randomized block design with three replications Hie results showed that 7-PT was the fastest in accelerating the vegetative growth of ramie The suitable dosage was 1.0 litrc/ha applied twice on 15 and 25 days after cuting, 0.5 htre/ha/application. The increase of chinagrass by adding the growth regulator was 57.8% compared to NPK fertilizer only.

Abstract

Prediction of dryspell and the onset of rainy season to im¬ prove cotton planting time in East JavaClimatic elements paticularly rainfall strongly influences successful prediction of rainfed cotton yield. Rainfall variability varies amongst the seasons. Thepreviousplantingtimcs were determined based in 10 years daily rainfall data (1975-1984). Longterm rainfall data are required for rainfall analysis to get reliable probabilities The rainfall analysis was done using Markov Cham First Order Probability and dryspcll probability methods. The rainfall data were collected from 17 rainfall stations in East Java (Banyuwangi, Situbondo. Probolinggo, Jember, Lumajang, Pasuruan, Mojokerto.Tuban and I -amongan). The planting times varied from the first week to the fouth week of December for Pasuruan, Probolinggo. Situbondo, Jember. and Banyu¬ wangi: for these areas sequential system of cotton ater maize is not recom¬ mended due to short rainy season The planting times in Lumajang. Lanongan. Mojoketo. and Tuban ranged from mid December to early January, sufficient length of rainy season suppoted sequential system in these areas. The improved cotton planting times were 1 -2 weeks earlier or later than the previous planting times.

Abstract

Effect of invigoration on seed viability and plant growth of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus I.)I aw vigour and viability of seed is the main factor causing the low productivity of crops. One of the methods of improving a deteriorating seed is in vigoratioo. The study was aimed at evaluating the effect of invigwation treatment on seed viability, plant growth and yield of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus). The experiment was conducted in two steps. The irst step was conducted in the laboratory of the Research Institute for Tobacco and Fibre Crops. Malang from Januai to April 1998 and the second step was conducted at Asembagus Expeimental Farm from Januai to May 1998. The experiment in the laboratory was designed as a completely randomized design while the field expeiment was done as a randomized block. The treatments were arranged factoially The irst factor was the seed vigour (growth uniformity) i.e. 40 or 60%, and the second factor was tnvigoration treatment, i.e control (untreated), water, sodium phosphate (2x10 M), sodium thiosulphatc ( 2 x 10 M), or tannic acid (2 x 10"* M). Results showed that invigoration treatments were not effective, when they were applied on the seed of 40% vigour. On the seed of 60% vigour, the invigoration improved seed vigor and viability. Treating the seed of 60% vigour with sodium phosphate (2x10 M) improved growth uniformity by 20% and potential viability by 7%, while applying the seed with sodium thiosulphnte decreased elcctroconductivity by 24.59 Mmhos/g compared to the control. Furthermore, treating seed of 60% vigour with sodium phosphite improved plant stand by 7 33%. increased plant height by 19 an. stem diameter bv 2 cm and fresh stem per plot (9at ) by 633 kg.
